about

People often ask us why we play the music that we do. Why would two young people become inspired to play the pop music of almost a century before, or the mountain music of the valleys, when they come from the coast? Really, it’s a question of why anyone plays the music that they do. Some folks say they were never good at anything else. Others joke that they took on the gigging life so they could justify partying five nights a week. Others describe their venture as a calling; they simply can’t not play.

For me, it can be as easy as saying, “It’s that sound! I love that sound!” It can be the fun of playing with R-rated double entendres, or the ever-morphing structure of my washboard. It can be community – we play to be in those rooms filled with dancers and sweat, good folk and good food. We play on the street, accosting unsuspecting souls with the opportunity to be involved in wonder, raw fun, or reflection. But it can also involve something much larger, romantic, haunting back to earlier times – We play to hop on that gorgeous bandwagon of the human musical experience, at once transcendent of and inexorably intertwined with time and place.

This project emerges from love and a sense of adventure. More practically, this project is a product of an economy where folks like me might as well be musicians, because the only other thing we qualify for is unpaid internships.

I want to thank my parents for their unwavering support - my mother Hope encouraging me always to do what “lights up my life.” I also want to thank Sarah & Clamp of the Sligo Creek Stompers, without whose influence and encouragement I never would have ventured off into this musical pipe dream.
