about

We recorded this delightful quilt of sounds at the famed Barns of Wolf Trap in Vienna, VA this past January. A sold-out crowd helped us along with claps, shouts and love. There's new, fresh originals on here, but also songs we've been playing for years. Something that continues to amaze us is how much our musical ideas change through the years of our live performances. The classic traditional tune "Jubilee" sounds NOTHING like it did on our studio recording, and our neither did our favorite Tom Waits cover "Clap Hands." The musical moments we made in "God Bless the Child" on this particular night were precious and unique, and we will never sound quite like that again. We are a consistently dynamic, evolving force. Our arrangements are dense and complex, but our individual creative expression bursts out in moments of playful improvisation. Our music is so joyful. And we continue to get better and better. We're proud to share evidence of that with you here. This is the Bumper Jacksons in action. "Live at Wolf Trap" is a beauty and we're excited to release it.

Track Name: I Sing the Body
I lived my whole life
Never knowing I was a bell
Until the moment I was lifted up and struck

We emerged as a moon in night
A kinesthetic blinding light
We melted each other down and then back up

I sing the body
(Put your back into it)
I resonate the body
(Put your mind into it)
Oo baby, won't you give me some
Of that rainbow light slipping off of your tongue
I wanna run, run, run
Stretch me tight like the skin of a drum

I celebrate a second birth
The morning that my ferns unfurled
For the first time, I could receive the sun
I penetrate and oscillate into the flow
Synthesize and recognize until I know
Humans are made of nothing but love

I sing the body
(Put your back into it)
I resonate the body
(Put your mind into it)
Oo baby, it ain't that hard
Get on your feet and raise up your arms
I want to lift your heart
If you don't move it can't be art

I sing the body
(Put your back into it)
I resonate the body
(Put your mind into it)
The Universe is wrapped in string
It can't do nothing but shake that thing
I wanna ring, ring, ring
Like a sweet, sweet bell on God's own wing

I sing the body
(Put your back into it)
I resonate the body
(Put your mind into it)
Oo baby I love you so
From the folds of your brain to the stretch of your toes
I wanna go, go, go
I want to love your soul

I sing the body
(Put your back into it)
I resonate the body
(Put your mind into it)
Oh love, we are soul embrace
In a moment of life time turned it's face
I wanna race, race, race
Jump off the world into the unknown Grace
Track Name: Come All You Virginia Gals
Come all you Virginia girls and listen to my noise
Don't you go a-courtin’ no a-courtin’ no boys
If you do your fortune'll be
Johnny cake and venison and sassafras tea
Johnny cake and venison and sassafras tea

When he come a courtin' I'll tell you what he'll say
First he'll say, did your daddy shoot a bear?
Then he'll say as he sits down,
Honey, can you bake them Johnny cakes brown
Honey, can you bake them Johnny cakes brown

When you marry he will take you to the Black Jack Hills.
There you'll stay, there you'll make your will.
There you'll stay and stare into space
Empty as your bottle for the rest of your days
Empty as your bottle for the rest of your days

When he build a house, he build it with log walls
Don't have windows; none at all!
When it rains, the tin roofs shouts
If you soak your bread now then you’ll never get out
If you soak your bread now then you’ll never get out

Sitting with the dogs will make a woman look mean
Pawn shop hair and alabaster sheen
Bury all the mirrors so you don’t have to look
You stole my youth but that’s all you took
You stole my youth

But in the Black JackHills there’s an uncovered hole
The men don’t follow, the men don’t know
Women hold the matches, and drink the whiskey down
When the moon is misty take the long way home
When the moon is misty take the long way home
Track Name: River
When the whiskey ain't workin
And I take no comfort in a toke
When my pills are all placebos
My cigarettes they're all broke
I reach for you in an empty bed
And I know you're with those other boys
I see your face in every crowd,
I hear your voice in their noise

That's when the night becomes my refugee
When I can be alone
But on that levee I hear those sirens,
They're calling me to come home

Yes the river she calls me:

Sweet baby child
Don't you cry
Come in to the comfort of my water's so deep
And sleep and sleep

Sweet child of my mine
Close your eyes
I'll hold you 'til you don't hurt no more
An carry you to that golden shore

ooo ooo ooo ooo
Track Name: Jubilee
Coffee grows on the white oak tree
River flows with brandy
I got a gal who's sweet and kind
Sweet as sugar candy

Swing and turn
Jubilee, live and learn, jubilee

Some come round on Saturday
Some come round on Sunday
If I had my pretty little miss
You wouldn't see me 'till Monday

Swing and turn
Jubilee, live and learn, jubilee

If I had no horse to ride
I'd be found a 'crawlin'
Up and down this mountainside
Searchin' for my darlin'

Swing and turn
Jubilee, live and learn, jubilee

Saddle up my milk white steed
I would be the rider
Headed on down to the cider mill
Fetch a jug of cider

Swing and turn
Jubilee, live and learn, jubilee
Track Name: I've Got My Whiskey (I Don't Need You)
Go on and leave me like you want to
I know your love for me is gone, long gone
I’ve got this bottle by my side, to keep me satisfied
So you and your memory can just move on

Chorus
I’ve got my whiskey, I don’t need you
It keeps me warmer every night than you could ever do
I’ve got my whiskey, I don’t need you
And its sticking with me right here at home

You’re a cold, heartless woman
treatin’ me like a stranger all the time
So this beard on my face has taken your hands’ place
Who needs a woman with a fuzzy face sweater like mine?

Chorus

You go and spend my money
On your nightly barroom spree
Those honky tonkin’ men won’t ever call you back again
while I’ve got a faithful lady at home a-waiting for me

Chorus

Now love may fade away and beards turn grey
And the most faithful dogs still go to the grave
All the things of this world will pass away when we die
But while the sun’s still burning there will be moonshine

Chorus
Track Name: St. Claude's Waltz
I've got the lonesome blues for you my love
I'm walking home on worn-down, drunk feet
I've got the lonesome blues for you, my dear
Why did I leave you for New Orleans?

I went off in search for the land of gold
I come home with pockets full of mud
Holding on to should's and what-if's like seeds
Tell me, can I still be loved?

I've got the lonesome blues for you, my love
So I'm drinking away my land of dreams.

I've got the lonesome blues for you my love
I'm walking home on worn-down, drunk feet
I've got the lonesome blues for you, my dear
I miss you in New Orleans

I went off in search for the land of gold
I come home with pockets full of mud
Holding on to should's and what-if's like seeds
Tell me, can I still be loved?
Track Name: Clap Hands
Sane, sane, they're all insane
Fireman's blind, the conductor is lame
A Cincinnati jacket and a sad-luck dame
Hanging out the window with a bottle full of rain
Clap hands, clap hands
Clap hands, clap hands

Said roar, roar, the thunder and the roar
Son of a bitch is never coming back here no more
The moon in the window and a bird on the pole
We can always find a millionaire to shovel all the coal
Clap hands, clap hands
Clap hands, clap hands

Said steam, steam, a hundred bad dreams
Going up to Harlem with a pistol in his jeans
A fifty-dollar bill inside a palladin's hat
And nobody's sure where Mr. Knickerbocker's at

Roar, roar, the thunder and the roar
Son of a bitch is never coming back here no more
Moon in the window and a bird on the pole
Always find a millionaire to shovel all the coal
Clap hands, clap hands
Clap hands, clap hands

Shine, shine, a Roosevelt dime
All the way to Baltimore and running out of time
Salvation Army seemed to wind up in the hole
They all went to heaven in a little row boat
Clap hands, clap hands
Clap hands, clap hands
Clap hands, clap hands
Clap hands, clap hands
Well, clap hands, well, clap hands
Oh, clap hands, clap hands
Track Name: Back in the Goodle Days
Some day about twenty-five years from now,
When we've all grown old from a-wondering how,
Oh we'll all sit down at the city dump,
And talk about the Goodle Days.

Oh you'll pass the joint and I'll pass the wine,
And anything good from a-down the line.
A lot of good things went down one time,
Back in the Goodle Days.

The Good Old Days are past and gone.
A lot of good people have done gone on.
That's my life when I sing this song about
Back in the Goodle Days

Sometimes I get to thinkin' that we're almost done,
And there ain't nothin' left that we can figure out.
And I guess it must have seemed a lot more like that
Back in the Goodle Days,

When ya gotta go, ya gotta go.
There's always somebody don'tcha know,
A-hangin' round a-sayin' "Well I told you so",
Back in the Goodle Days.

The Good Old Days are past and gone.
A lot of good people have done gone on.
That's my life when I sing this song about
Back in the Goodle Days

Oh we'll all join hands and we'll gather round,
When that old guitar starts to make that sound.
A lot of good things went down downtown,
Back in the Goodle Days.

We's in love with the people that we hadn't even met,
Out for anything that we could get.
Oh we did it then and we'll do it yet,
Back in the Goodle Days.

The Good Old Days are past and gone.
A lot of good people have done gone on.
That's my life when I sing this song about
Back in the Goodle Days
Track Name: God Bless the Child
Then that's got shall have
Them that's not shall lose
So the Bible said and it still is news

Mama, may have, papa, may have
But God, bless the child that's got his own
That's got his own

Yes, the strong gets more
While the weak one's fade
Empty pockets don't, ever make the grade

Mama, may have, papa, may have
But God, bless the child that's got his own
That's got his own

Money, you've got lots of friends
They're crowding 'round your door
But when you're gone and spending ends
They don't come no more

Rich relations give
Crusts of bread and such
You can help yourself
But don't take too much

Mama, may have, papa, may have
But God, bless the child that's got his own
That's got his own

He just don't worry about nothin'
'Cause he's got his own
Yes he's got his own
Track Name: Mama Don't Want No Peas No Rice No Cocoanut Oil
Mama don't want no peas ,no rice, no cocoanut oil
Mama don't want no peas ,no rice, no cocoanut oil
Mama don't want no peas, no rice
Mama don't want no cocoanut oil
She just keep her brandy handy all the day

Mama don't want no gin 'cause it's bound to make her sin
Mama don't want no glass of gin 'cause it's bound to make her sin
Mama don't want no gin
'Cause it's bound to make her sin
It makes her feel hot and bothered all the day

Mama she likes that rum, it fills her so with fun
Mama she likes that rum, it fills her so with fun
Mama she say she likes that rum,
'Cause it fills her so with fun
It makes her feel like whoopie all the day

Mama complains she got a pain across her chest
Mama complains she got a pain across her chest
Mama complains she got a pain
She says the reason's very plain
The food that papa gave her won't digest

Mama lay down to sleep last night, she said she feelin' cold
Mama lay down to sleep last night, she said she feelin' cold
Mama lay down to sleep last night, she told
She said was feelin' oh so cold
She said papa, he must be getting old

Mama don't want no peas ,no rice, no cocoanut oil
Mama don't want no peas ,no rice, no cocoanut oil
Mama don't want no peas, no rice
Mama don't want no cocoanut oil
She just keep her brandy handy all the day
Track Name: Dirt Road Blues
Gonna walk down that dirt road 'til someone will let me ride
Gonna walk down that dirt road 'til someone will let me ride
If I can't find my baby I'm gonna run away and hide

Well, I been pacing round the room, hoping maybe she come back
Pacing round the room, hoping maybe she come back
Well, I been praying for salvation
Laying round in a one-room country shack

Gonna walk down that dirt road, until my eyes begin to bleed
Gonna walk down that dirt road, until my eyes begin to bleed
'Til there's nothing left to see
'Til the chains have been shattered and I been freed

Gonna walk down that dirt road 'til I'm right beside the sun
Gonna walk down that dirt road 'til I'm right beside the sun
Rolling through the rain and hail, searching for the sunny side of love

Gonna walk down that dirt road 'til someone will let me ride
Gonna walk down that dirt road 'til someone will let me ride
If I can't find my baby I'm gonna run away and hide
Track Name: Alrighty Then!
